A Culture of Philanthropy
Here at APS, giving back to our community is woven into the core of who we are as a company. A culture of giving, serving, supporting, and raising awareness for causes that are dear to us is something that we hold in high value. It’s so deep in our core that APS has been a “Partners in Philanthropy” honoree in 2011, 2013, 2016, and now again in 2017. Partners in Philanthropy honors Louisville-area businesses for their financial support of charities and worthy causes. You can read more about this year’s honorees here.
Whether it’s raising awareness for World Alzheimer’s Day (the photo above is of our team wearing purple to show support) or collecting school supplies for local youth, we love to stay active in caring for the community. Research has shown that a workplace culture of giving helps employees to connect meaning and purpose to their work, while also promoting team building and connecting employees to worthy community endeavors.
Serving our Non-Profit Clients
Here at APS, we are grateful to serve several of our non-profit clients. One organization we partner with is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana. Big Brothers Big Sisters has been in existence for over 100 years and is the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network. Every year, thousands of children’s lives are changed for the better due to the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters. It has been an honor to be a partner and we look forward to a future of continuing to work with this fantastic non-profit!
APS loved being a part of “Bowl for Kid’s Sake.” This photo was from the 2015 Big Brothers Big sisters event.
APS worked with Kentucky Kingdom to provide over 200 “Bigs” and “Littles” free admission to the park in July 2016.
“Give a Day of Service”
This year, we implemented a new program called “Give a Day of Service.” This program allows APS team members the opportunity to personally impact and improve the quality of life of people in their local community. This can be done in two different ways:
- Monetary or charitable donations from employees to finance charitable events, fundraisers or projects.
- Participation in volunteer activities. Team members will have the opportunity to donate time to those in need in the community
Here’s how it works: employees can request up to 8 hours of paid time off during the work week per anniversary year to participate in the “Give a Day of Service” program. Once employees have found a charitable activity, they can use their time in 4 or 8-hour increments. This has been a great experience for our staff and company as a whole.
Be Sure to Have Fun
No matter what we are doing, we make sure to have a good time. Encourage your team, promote unity and healthy competition through giving and volunteering. One way we do this is through our “Penny War Competition.” We divide into teams, and each team competes to raise the most money for the American Heart Association. Every two weeks we total up each team’s contributions. When it comes time for the annual American Heart Association’s Heart Walk we combine our contributions and present them to AHA the Friday before the Heart Walk. Last year, we raised over $700!

We have also had a great time with our School Supplies drive this year! The collected supplies will go to Dixie Elementary and Johnsontown Elementary before school is in session. It is a great feeling to know we are able to directly contribute to a student’s success in our community.
Need Some Philanthropic Inspiration for Your Company?
Is your company wanting to start a philanthropic endeavor but is unsure where to start? Here are some suggestions of potential avenues of giving and volunteering:
- Host a dry and canned food drive, then donate the collected items to a local soup kitchen or food bank.
- Donate a percentage of the proceeds of company profits to designated non-profit(s).
- Survey staff to select local organizations of employees’ choosing for which to get involved in.
- Reach out to local schools and host a school supplies drive.
- Get active together! Find a 5K or walk to support an organization of your choosing and allow staff to participate together.
