Not your typical team building!
Team building is one of the most important aspects of managing your employees and fostering happiness within your organization. Yet, it’s also one of the most forgotten about aspects as well. Too often companies simply buy lunch and sit around a table playing icebreakers, and call that team building. Though a good icebreaker does have its place on the team building agenda and employees appreciate a free lunch, those things don’t challenge a team to learn and grow together. It’s time to start planning team building activities that will actually build up your team – plus be fun and challenging!
One of the biggest barriers to unique team building is conventional thinking. Who says Instagram can’t spark team building? Why can’t your next team building day take place out in nature? Whether you’ve got a large corporate office or a handful of people working at a small business, there are so many unique team building opportunities in Louisville. Here are just a few ideas to kick your next team building session up a notch.
Try to escape!
You’ve probably seen the photos, a group of people holding a sign that says “We broke out!” Escape games, also called break out games, are all the rage right now – and can take your team building to the next level!
If you’ve never done an escape game, the concept is exactly what it sounds like. An escape games staff member locks your team in a room with a mission to solve. Find all the clues and unlock the mystery to escape.
Escape games require problem solving and teamwork to complete the mission. By signing your team up for an escape game, you are taking all of the principles of teamwork and putting them into action outside the office. Want to see if your team really knows how to work together? Lock them in a room and ask them to solve the puzzle before the 60-minute mark. Not only will you see how your team truly operates under pressure, but true personalities will start to show, making it a great opportunity to get to know everyone a little better.
Louisville has multiple escape game companies, each with a variety of missions from intellect-challenging missions to missions that raise the fear factor. Breakout Games, Locked in, and EscapeLou are just a few of the escape rooms in Louisville.
Insta your way around town
Take team building to the streets and start a little friendly competition via Instagram. A photo scavenger hunt around town is the perfect way to get your team active and working together. It’s as simple as making a list of locations for your employees to visit and creating clues that will lead them to each place, then create a hashtag they can use to tag the photos. At each new place, they will snap a photo of themselves there and post it to Instagram.
Chances are your employees live all across Louisville, so small teams will have to work together to leverage their neighborhood knowledge to find landmarks, monuments, historic sites, and hidden gems in the city. Your employees will love finding new and cool places across town and you’ll get your team working together outside of the office.
Battle it out in an epic showdown
Laser guns probably aren’t elements of conventional team building, but taking your team to play a game of laser tag is a way to challenge your team and encourage teamwork – and also a safe way! Playing laser tag on teams requires your employees to strategize their way through the maze of barriers to tag other players without getting hit themselves. And this is a “no man left behind” atmosphere because if one person is continually tagged, the whole team will be brought down.
If you want to avoid kid-filled laser tag arenas, Louisville’s entertainment destination Main Event has laser tag that is less likely to cater to the kiddos during typical office hours.
Go back to camp!
We all remember the good ol’ days of summer camp with activities like trust falls and climbing walls. Well, there’s nothing that says your team can’t go back! When they’re not running a summer camp, camps like Camp Piomingo offer team building activities for businesses and other groups. What says teamwork better than low ropes courses and challenge courses?
The great thing about most places like Camp Piomingo is that they will help create a program tailored to your team and then lead it for you, allowing you to participate as well. Plus, when the weather is beautiful, it is refreshing to get away from technology and enjoy the outdoors.
Go Ape is also another great option, especially for a thrill-seeking team. While over 40 feet up in the trees, your team will complete obstacles and overcome fears together. What better way to bond?
